Karachi Shaken Again: 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Multiple Areas—Residents Evacuate in Panic
Karachi experienced a sudden jolt on March 31, 2025, when tremors shook several neighborhoods including Scheme 33, Surjani Town, North Karachi, Sohrab Goth, and nearby areas.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the quake measured 4.7 in magnitude and originated 75 kilometers north of Karachi at a depth of 19 kilometers. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a slightly different magnitude of 4.6, placing the epicenter 65 kilometers east-southeast of Uthal in Balochistan at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The earthquake struck at 4:10 PM, startling residents who quickly evacuated their homes and buildings in fear. Though no damage has been reported, the sudden shaking caused widespread alarm.
Authorities have since calmed fears, stating that no immediate aftershocks are expected and urging citizens to remain calm and vigilant.
This marks the latest in a string of minor quakes to hit Karachi:
- June 3, 2024 – A 3.2 magnitude quake shook areas like Clifton, with its epicenter 15 km northeast of the city.
- May 2, 2024 – A 2.3 magnitude tremor struck Gadap Town, Kathor, and Malir district.
- April 24, 2024 – A 3.2 magnitude quake was felt in Malir.
Though none of these tremors caused major damage, the frequency has raised concerns among residents and experts alike.
